• 門 indicates something closed, or something you don't understand. Imagine that something is happening behind the gates, and you can't see it but can hear it. Or rather, you try to listen to find out what it is.
• Note that the lowest horizontal line of 耳 in 聞 is shorter than that from 耳(ear) alone. It stops at the vertical line.
